Abstract
The river Buriganga, an emblem of the historic Dhaka City, has been mistreated by the locale for as far back as one can remember. The recent explosion of tanneries along the river, along with its toxic waste, has made it one of the most polluted rivers in the earth. Recent efforts have seen the government relocate these tanneries to other zones. This study aims to determine the level of improvement in the quality of water in the Buriganga river as a result of the relocation of tanneries from Dhaka to Savar. Based on the review of the literature and survey conducted for the sole purpose of this study, it can be said that relocation has made some minor improvements while large scale integrated efforts by both government and citizens are gravely needed to further improve the quality of water in Buriganga.
