A day-long workshop on 'The role of Innovative Microfinance in Rural Development: Youth Power and Rural Entrepreneurship Development' organised by the Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB) was held at BRDB's Conference Room in the city on Thursday. Professor Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, vice chancellor, North South University, and chairman, Grameen Bank, was present as the chief guest. The workshop was presided over by Sardar Md. Keramat Ali (additional secretary), director general, BRDB, while Md. Ziaul Hasan, deputy director (planning) of BRDB, presented the keynote paper. Cinematographer Rashed Zaman delivers talk on film, architecture at NSU

Renowned Bangladeshi cinematographer Rashed Zaman delivered a lecture at North South University (NSU) under the Department of Architecture’s Kathon Lecture Series, exploring the intricate connection between architecture and film. Drawing from his academic background in both fields and his professional journey from Hollywood to the Bangladeshi film industry, Zaman discussed how architectural thinking shapes visual diversity and spatial perception in cinema. He highlighted two core lessons from architecture—the ability to imagine in empty spaces and the value of discipline over intelligence—as essential to creative work. Zaman also noted key differences between the two disciplines, stressing that cinematography demands quicker visual evolution and involves more compromises due to environmental and budgetary constraints. Citing Polish cinematographer Witold Sobocinski, he shared a guiding principle that inspires his work: “Make pictures, don’t make photographs.”

NSU confers degrees on over 3,000 graduates at 26th convocation

Professor Dr Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, adviser to the Ministry of Education, chaired the convocation, whilst Professor Dr SMA Faiz, chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), delivered the convocation address. Professor Dr Mohammad Anwar Hossen, UGC Member, attended as a special guest. The ceremony was attended by NSU's Board of Trustees, including Chairman Aziz Al Kaiser, alongside Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr Nasar Uddin Ahmed, and Treasurer Professor Abdur Rob Khan. Professor Md Mamun Molla from NSU's Department of Mathematics and Physics, serving as Convocation Marshall. Following the convocation speaker's remarks, the Deans of NSU's four schools-Professor AKM Waresul Karim (Business and Economics), Professor Md Rizwanul Islam (Humanities and Social Sciences), Professor Shazzad Hosain (Engineering and Physical Sciences), and Professor Dipak Kumar Mitra (Health and Life Sciences)-presented the degree candidates.
