    Alokito Teacher, NSU sign MoU to enhance teacher education in Bangladesh

    Alokito Teachers Ltd. and North South University (NSU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly revolutionise teacher education and professional development in Bangladesh.     NSU is building bridges between classrooms and cultures (NSU VC interview with The Business Standard)

    Bangladesh’s education system is marked by deep structural fragmentation and an absence of convergence among its diverse academic streams. Drawing from decades of academic experience across North America and Bangladesh—including leadership roles at North South University (NSU)—this reflection identifies critical weaknesses in the country’s educational trajectory. While nations such as the United States and Canada successfully integrate students from varied primary and secondary backgrounds into a unified higher-education framework, Bangladesh’s general, madrasa, and technical streams remain socially and academically segregated. This division is exacerbated by societal prejudices and governance practices that prioritise control over quality. The essay argues that meaningful transformation must begin with reforming teacher recruitment, training, and compensation—areas currently overshadowed by an infrastructure-focused budget and politicised hiring. It further critiques Bangladesh’s cultural fixation on grades and “golden GPAs,” which undermines authentic learning and marginalises slower-paced learners. Highlighting NSU’s efforts toward internationalisation and cultural harmony, the discussion underscores the potential of diverse, globally engaged campuses to cultivate tolerance and critical thinking.     Southeast Bank, NSU unveil co-branded Visa cards

    Southeast Bank PLC. and North South University (NSU) have launched a VISA Co-Branded Credit and Prepaid Card to promote digital financial inclusion for the academic community. The launch was held recently at the NSU campus in Bashundhara, Dhaka. The event was graced by Professor Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor of NSU; Mr. Abidur Rahman Chowdhury, Managing Director (Current Charge) of Southeast Bank PLC; and Mr. Sabbir Ahmed, Country Manager of Visa for Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.As part of the initiative, Southeast Bank has rolled out co-branded credit cards exclusively for eligible NSU faculty and staff, offering lifetime annual fee waivers and tailored credit limits based on individual eligibility.
