Abstract
A seminar on “Global Peace and Harmony: Bangladesh’s Role in UN Peacekeeping” was held at North South University in Dhaka to mark the International Day of Peace 2025. NSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury emphasised the individual’s role in fostering societal peace and stressed keeping humanity at the core of all peace efforts. Keynote speaker Major General Hussain Muhammad Masihur Rahman highlighted Bangladesh’s longstanding contributions to UN peacekeeping, noting both the nation’s sacrifices and the global goodwill earned. Speakers from the military, police, academia and policy sectors discussed emerging challenges to peace, including geopolitical volatility, terrorism, climate-driven conflicts and disinformation. They underscored the need for stronger education, digital literacy, specialised training and a balanced approach integrating defence, diplomacy and development. Participants also stressed the importance of keeping the military apolitical and recognising peacekeepers’ contributions. The event concluded with calls for Bangladesh to evolve from being only a “country of peacekeepers” into a “nation of peace” rooted in humanistic values.
