B-JET Centre begins 13th batch at NSU

The Career and Placement Center (CPC) of the North South University hosted the opening ceremony of the 13th batch of the Bangladesh Japan ICT Engineers Training Programme (B-JET) on Monday. Shinnusuke Tasaka, programme manager of B-JET, introduced the 34 newly selected trainees who underwent a competitive selection process, said a press release. B-JET equips trainees with Japanese language proficiency, cultural insights, study techniques, business etiquette, and technical knowledge.

Bangladesh and China would foster stronger ties in technology transfer and skills development, expert said at ‘Dhaka China Day 2024’ programme at North South University, jointly organised by embassy of China in Bangladesh and NSU on Tuesday. As chief guest, brigadier general (retired) M Sakhawat Hussain, adviser to the ministry of textiles and jute and the ministry of shipping, graced the event. Yao Wen, Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh and Azim Uddin Ahmed, chairman of the NSU board of trustees, joined as special guests. Other dignitaries included Yasmin Kamal and Aziz Al Kaiser, members of the NSU board of trustees, professor Abdur Rob Khan, treasurer and acting pro-vice-chancellor, and Ma Xioyan, director of the Confucius Institute at NSU. The session was chaired by professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, vice-chancellor of NSU.

The program included discussion meetings, painting competitions cultural programs etc. Prominent writer, researcher and founder trustee of Liberation War Museum Mofidul Haque was present as the chief guest at the event. University VC Professor Atiqul Islam chaired the program where NSU Trustee Member Seema Ahmed and University Treasurer and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Acting) Professor Abdur Rob Khan were present as special guests.

NSU holds int’l confce on transboundary rivers of South Asia

The inaugural session of the two-day long international conference on ‘Transboundary Rivers of South Asia: Fostering Regional Collaboration for Environmental Sustainability’ successfully commenced on Tuesday at North South University. The event, organised by the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance in collaboration with the department of geography at the University of Manchester, UK, and the National River Conservation Commission, Bangladesh, aims to address critical issues surrounding transboundary river management and environmental sustainability in South Asia, said a press release. The South Asian Network for Public Administration is the associate partner of the conference. The opening ceremony featured professor Akhlaque Haque, SANPA president, Mehebub Sahana, lecturer, University of Manchester, UK, ambassador Mashfee Binte Shams, rector, foreign service academy, ministry of foreign affairs, Bangladesh, Sarwar Mahmud, NRCC chairman, and professor Atiqul Islam, NSU vice-chancellor.

Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, education and cultural affairs adviser to the PM, was present as chief guest and professor Mizanur Rahman, president of Bangladesh Progressive Columnist Forum was chief discussant, said a press release. Lawmaker Nazma Akhter, professor Rashid Askari, vice president of Bangladesh Progressive Columnist Forum, and Md Afizur Rahman, executive director of Dainik Bangla, and Newsbangla24 were present as special guests. General secretary of Bangladesh Progressive Columnist Forum professor Milton Biswas presented the keynote paper at the seminar. NSU vice-chancellor professor Atiqul Islam presided over the programme. NSU holds spring festival celebration

North South University celebrated the '2024 Spring Festival Celebration Event' on Tuesday and Wednesday the 6th and 7th of February 2024, which is the most celebrated event in Chinese culture. The event was jointly organized by the Confucius Institute at North South University and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Bangladesh at North-South University. This event aimed to introduce students to the cultural significance of Chinese New Year and Chinese dumplings while providing them with a hands-on experience of making and tasting dumplings, reads a press release.

This strategic partnership is set to create numerous opportunities for both parties, fostering collaboration and opening new doors for the NSU students to gain real-world experience in one of the world’s leading telecom institutions. The NSU vice-chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury emphasised the crucial role of industry exposure in developing future leaders at the event, stating, ‘This partnership with Grameenphone provides our students with invaluable opportunities to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and professional excellence.’

NSU professor Emdadul Haque dies

M Emdadul Haque, professor and chair of the Department of History and Philosophy at North South University, died of cardiac arrest at The United Hospital on Sunday afternoon. He was 67. His namaz-e-janaza was held at the NSU plaza area on Sunday evening. After completing his Master’s from the University of Waterloo in Canada, M Emdadul Haque joined the teaching profession at Chittagong University in 1982.

NSU stands by Khairul injured in quota reform movement

The North South University authority is monitoring a former student of the university, Khairul Alam, who is on life support at a hospital in Dhaka after he was injured on August 5 while participating in the student movement for quota reform. A NSU press release on Monday said that the university authority provided financial assistance, and would take full responsibility for the treatment of Khairul, who was on life support due to bleeding in the brain as well as lung failure. A guest worker of the NSU Career and Placement Center, Khairul has been fighting for his life for the past seven days. The NSU vice-chancellor Atiqul Islam said, ‘We are shocked and worried about the incident. We have already provided financial assistance, and the university will take full responsibility for his treatment.’ The CPC director Khasru Mia visited him at the hospital on behalf of the university, and talked to Khairul’s family.
