| dc.description.abstract | Renowned Bangladeshi cinematographer Rashed Zaman delivered a lecture at North South University (NSU) under the Department of Architecture’s Kathon Lecture Series, exploring the intricate connection between architecture and film. Drawing from his academic background in both fields and his professional journey from Hollywood to the Bangladeshi film industry, Zaman discussed how architectural thinking shapes visual diversity and spatial perception in cinema. He highlighted two core lessons from architecture—the ability to imagine in empty spaces and the value of discipline over intelligence—as essential to creative work. Zaman also noted key differences between the two disciplines, stressing that cinematography demands quicker visual evolution and involves more compromises due to environmental and budgetary constraints. Citing Polish cinematographer Witold Sobocinski, he shared a guiding principle that inspires his work: “Make pictures, don’t make photographs.” | |
