Drawing from decades of academic experience across North America and Bangladeshâincluding leadership roles at North South University (NSU)âthis reflection identifies critical weaknesses in the countryâs educational trajectory. While nations such as the United States and Canada successfully integrate students from varied primary and secondary backgrounds into a unified higher-education framework, Bangladeshâs general, madrasa, and technical streams remain socially and academically segregated. This division is exacerbated by societal prejudices and governance practices that prioritise control over quality. The essay argues that meaningful transformation must begin with reforming teacher recruitment, training, and compensationâareas currently overshadowed by an infrastructure-focused budget and politicised hiring. It further critiques Bangladeshâs cultural fixation on grades and âgolden GPAs,â which undermines authentic learning and marginalises slower-paced learners. Highlighting NSUâs efforts toward internationalisation and cultural harmony, the discussion underscores the potential of diverse, globally engaged campuses to cultivate tolerance and critical thinking. - ItemOpen AccessBRDB workshop on innovative microfinance for rural development(The Financial Express, 2025-08-24) The Financial ExpressA day-long workshop on 'The role of Innovative Microfinance in Rural Development: Youth Power and Rural Entrepreneurship Development' organised by the Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB) was held at BRDB's Conference Room in the city on Thursday. Professor Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, vice chancellor, North South University, and chairman, Grameen Bank, was present as the chief guest. The workshop was presided over by Sardar Md. Keramat Ali (additional secretary), director general, BRDB, while Md. Ziaul Hasan, deputy director (planning) of BRDB, presented the keynote paper. Representatives from various ministries, divisions, directorates and agencies attended the workshop.
