North South Business Review (NSBR) is a peer reviewed business journal. This journal is published by School of Business & Economics of North South University which is a leading business school in South Asia. However, it is regulated by the Editorial Board comprised by internationally famous scholars in business filed from USA, Canada, UK, and Bangladesh. The journey of this journal has been started from 1996. Since 2013, this journal has been published two issues each year. The North South Business Review (NSBR) is a journal dedicated to publishing theoretical, conceptual, applied and fundamental research in multidimensional fields of business and development. NSBR provides researchers with an avenue to make significant contributions to emerging issues in business. The journal encourages article submissions that position the foundation for future investigations. Hence, NSBR also encourages research papers that apply theory developed from business study to actual business scenario. Recognizing the complex relationship between many areas of business and service related activities, NSBR examines a wide variety of business decisions, processes, and performance within interdisciplinary setting. Theoretical and empirical studies of managers’ behavior, financial planning, organizational relations, marketing strategy, risk strategy and international business are also encouraged on a regular basis.

Online learning can be a potential solution to this problem. Such online learning requires facilities and infrastructure at the universities, a robust data infrastructure at the national level, and adequate computing devices and sufficient and affordable data services for the students. This study is one of the first in Bangladesh that attempts to gauge the need and readiness of various stakeholders to implement successful online education. This paper reveals that universities may not be ready for online education and that a digital divide exists that may online education inaccessible to a significant number of students.
- ItemOpen AccessA Study of HRM Practices in the Apparel Industry in Bangladesh: A Social Perspective(North South University, 2021-12) Muzdalifa Anzum; Helal AhammadThe article examined the current HRM practices in the manufacturing industry in Bangladesh, most prominently in the apparel sector which is the most important booster of economic growth for the country. Unfortunately, research has shown that the industry has observed lack of leadership and managerial proficiency which has led to various devastating accidents and fierce labour protests. The study was able to scrutinize the gap and some future managerial implications based on analysis of information from different scholarly resources. The entire article was constructed and analysed from a social perspective to pinpoint the under covered societal issues which leads to different other problems in countries like Bangladesh where the societal structure is the base for most of the management practices locally. The Government and many international organizations like IMF, World Bank have lent hand and given immense support to the industry, but the development path is still hindered. Since most of the researches earlier conducted research on the health and safety issues in this industry and general HRM practices, this paper will allow readers to further perceive the concerned issues from societal viewpoint in terms of leadership and management from the very core that has allowed spread of all other branches of complications and unrest. The findings of this paper have indicated that there is no standard HRM structure practiced in factories and the core issue is the absent role of efficient leaders and motivating executives.

Shirin; Mohammad Mahboob RahmanThis empirical study aims to develop an efficient e-waste management model for emerging economies and developing countries. To propose the same, first, the critical factors for sustainable e-waste management have been identified from both suppliers and consumers, with a combination of judgement and convenient sampling. The model has been proposed through qualitative analysis taking into account the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the informal scenario of e-waste handling, that is predominant in these nations. The research indicates the economic, social, and environmental benefits of the model, and, thus, offers valuable academic insights necessary to understand the e-waste solutions in the background of developing countries like Bangladesh. It can also assist the public and private organizations to realize the critical factors and their roles required to create a sustainable e-waste management framework.

In order to identify influential political marketing mix components, 2357 primary data were collected from general voters through a survey. The paper offers 43 important indicators of the political mix, grouped under eight dimensions namely product, party, price, place, promotion, persuasion, people, and physical evidence. Based on the findings of the quantitative study, a number of recommendations have been made which can be useful to political parties, candidates, and political marketing consultants.

Previous studies show that online entertainment media piracy has been a significant thing in the local market, but the same cannot be said about the streaming platform. Thus, in order to get an insight into the usage of such services, the paper will choose to explore the acceptability and adoption of streaming services through the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Further, to better understand streaming service use, the current study examines the relationship between all the factors of TAM through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM).

One invention, the Internet, has caused businesses to look at their way of doing business again and again to make things more efficient and effective. One of the areas affected by Internet is Supply Chain Management (SCM). Therefore Electronic Supply Chain Management (E-SCM) has become an increasingly important topic to businesses. Business entities are able to interact real-time with the World Wide Web (WWW) service in the Internet and exchange information transparently. This allows trading partners a very improved way of communications resulting quicker diagnosis, feedback, and solutions to inventory and customer service problems. Hence E-SCM is born. This paper investigates the current web initiatives of three different industries, Transportation, Pharmaceuticals, and Banking, in Bangladesh and attempts to find out how successful these industries are using the internet to integrate their supply chain. This research uses a qualitative experimental design approach by comparing across a variety of factors affecting E-SCM for a group of selected companies from each industry mentioned above.
- ItemOpen AccessAntecedents of Customer Satisfaction Towards Shopping Malls: From the Perspective of Less Developed Countries(North South University, 2017-12) Mahafuz Mannan; Riasat Muhammad Amir; Ehfaz Nowman; Mohammad Baktiar Rana; Mohammad Mahboob RahmanThe purpose of this study is to identify and develop measurement scales for antecedents of customer satisfaction towards shopping mall for less developed countries taking Bangladesh as a unit of analysis. This study also established three important outcomes of customer satisfaction - patronage intentions, word of mouth and trust - in that respect to strengthening existing literature on these relationships. The antecedents and items of their corresponding constructs were identified with the help of an expert panel and extensive literature review. The proposed model was tested using PLS-SEM with a sample size of 400 respondents collect from eight shopping malls around Dhaka city, Bangladesh. Identified antecedents of customer satisfaction towards shopping malls are convenience, atmosphere, security, food facilities and shop variety, and they were found to have significant positive effects customer satisfaction. Customer satisfaction was found to have significant positive effects on patronage intentions, word of mouth and trust. This research aims to contribute to the scarcity of research regarding shopping malls in perspective of less developed countries. The developed scales of antecedents of customer satisfaction were formative, which regards to shopping malls is a pioneer.

Thelimited sample size and focus in only service sector may affect the development of scale. The scale can be developed for other sectors too. Managers of service sector can use this scale to understand consumers switching behavior and take marketing strategies to improve their service quality accordingly.

Although proliferation literature exists on mobile adoption, studies centered at the BOP market are limited. The scales i f this study were adapted from previous research, namely, Technology Acceptance model (TAM). To identifr and prioritize factors affecting perceived intention to use smart phones, a sample size of 100 respondents 09-om the BOP segment) participated in this study; exploratory factor analysis (EM) was later conducted. The results of this study confirms that BOP consumers' intention(s) to use smart phones is positive and significantly associated with attitude to use smart phones. The Findings of this study may contribute to phone manufacturers and other indusby players (i.e. Telecom Companies) to devise strategies (i.e. communication) and target this potentially vast, yet untapped market.
- ItemOpen AccessConstructing tacit knowledge sharing Behaviour among the Non-academic Member of Institutions Higher Learning(North South University, 2016-12) Muhammad Sabbir Rahman; Hasliza Hassan; Nazrul Islam; Mahmud Habib Zaman; Mohammad Mahboob RahmanThe purpose of this research is to explain the critical success factors of tacit knowledge sharing behavior among the non-academic staff of higher learning institutions. This research applied cross-sectional research design where the researchers used survey questionnaires for data collection. The data analysis used 150 non-academic staff of Malaysian higher learning institutions. This research applied confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to assess the measurement model. The result from CFA analysis shows four-factor model supported the data which proved all the fit indices suggested by the previous researchers. The four-factor model was comprised of the underlying factors: 1) Big-Five personality traits 2) Motivation, 3) Self-efficacy, and 4) Mutual trust. The implication emanating from this study is that the higher learning institutions require those factors to facilitate the tacit knowledge sharing behavior among the non-academic staff of higher learning institutions.
- ItemOpen AccessContinuing relevance of participatory rural appraisal: Manageral implications and strategic importance for democracy(North South University, 2016-12) Ahmedul Kabir; Mohammad Mahboob RahmanParticipatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), as a tool of development research since the 1970s, has been successful in its pursuit of social justice, poverty alleviation and democratisation, and has continuing relevance. The impetus is not on the spread of PRA, but on participatory approaches, behaviour, attitudes, and mindset. PRA has the flexibility to adapt and synthesise with other development tools. Therefore, it has the ability to meet immediate social demands through improvisation, and turn itself into a movement. This democratic PRA entered the development mainstream in the early 1990s in a definitive move from the controversial, top down bureaucratic project planning methodologies like that of survey questionnaires, coinciding with the collapse of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Long before PRA was conceptualized, its basic principles were in practical use in informal ways in many parts of the world. Participation has numerous managerial implications in terms of quality decisions, ownership of decisions, leadership, economies of scale, higher levels of productivity, and effective utilization of available resources. The concept of participation is increasingly seen in the context of citizenship and local governance. The transformative notion of participation endows people with the right to participate in politics, democracy, and development.
- ItemOpen AccessCorporate governance and financing decisions of Sri Lankan listed firms(North South University, 2018-12) Dr. Pratheepkanth Puwanenthiren,; Mr.Sathasivam Balaputhiran; Mohammad Mahboob RahmanThe purpose of this paper is to evaluate the association between corporate governance and financing decisions in Sri Lanka as an example of emerging market. Data are drawn from a sample of 150 listed firms from the Colombo stock exchange (CSE). Multiple regression analysis is used in the study in estimating the relationship between the corporate governance and financing decisions. Corporate governance was proxied by board size, independent directors, board meeting and CEO duality. Financing decisions was measured by Debt ratio. The empirical results show statistically significant and positive associations between board size, independent directors, firm size and growth and financing decisions (debt ratio), suggesting that Sri Lankan listed firms pursue high debt policy with a larger board size and higher percentage of independent directors. The results also indicate an insignificant relationship between the board meeting, CEO duality and financing decisions. Accordingly, the results recommend that firms with well-established corporate governance structures are able to gain easier access to debt financing at lower cost since such firms are able to repay their debt on time. The main value of this paper is the analysis of the effect of corporate governance on financing decisions from the Sri Lankan perspective.
- ItemOpen AccessDetecting Earning Manipulation in a Developing Economy: An Empirical Study Using Beneish M-score Model(North South University, 2021-06) Ms. Shirin Sharmin; Mr. Ashraful Arefin; Dr. Mohammad Arman; Abdul Hannan ChowdhuryManipulation of financial statements entails the intentional and often ill-motivated manoeuvring of financial records towards a pre-determined target. In such cases, motivations include achieving budgetary targets and rewarding senior managers with generous rewards – a classic instance of conflict of interests. Such manipulations have lately become increasingly frequent and severe in Bangladesh. In this back drop, the concerned board of directors is looking for improved surveillance techniques to better prevent and/or, detect and investigate possible financial frauds. In their quest for proactive approach against manipulation of financial statements, the board of directors look for warning signs and the present empirical study provides a profile of a company that is likely to manipulate its financial statements. In this study, data from 2016-2017 financial reports were utilized that correspond to 105 companies, excluding banks, non-banking financial institutions, insurance companies, and mutual funds listed at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the likelihood of accounting manipulation was quantified applying Beneish M-score model. It revealed that the maximum M-score was 7.06 and the minimum was -8.98, where higher scores indicate increased likelihood of accounting manipulation. Using a cut-off point of -1.78, twenty five companies were found to be suspected of accounting manipulation, while using a cut-off point of -2.22, fifty seven companies were found to be likely manipulator. Later a logistic model was developed to relate the likelihood of accounting manipulation to several company specific variables that were not explicitly considered in the Beneish M-score model. The findings are likely to benefit analysis of profiles of companies prone to accounting manipulation and thus could contribute to better corporate governance practices in emerging economies such as Bangladesh.
- ItemOpen AccessDynamics of Customers' Online Medicine Purchase Intention(North South University, 2021-12) Sumaiya Farhana Sumi; Mohammed Abdul Mumin Evan; Rashedul Hasan; Md Afnan Hussain; Muhammad Sabbir Rahman; Helal AhammadThe outbreak of COVID-19 and the availability of online buying sites encouraged people to order products staying from home. It has been observed that people even buy their medicine online by uploading their prescriptions. Despite the importance of online medicine purchase, scant attention is given to investigate the factors motivating customers to use such advancement. As a result, drawing on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and other contemporary literature directions, the study identifies four factors that might influence customers' online medicine purchase intention. Consequently, data were collected from 160 respondents for empirical investigation. Using PLS-SEM, the data analysis reveals that perceived usefulness, ease of use, and security issues play a vital role while customers intend to order medicine through online platforms. The factor of website layout design does not produce any significant effect. The study contributes by extending TAM theory and addressing the gap by advancing the business and management information system literature in the aspect of online medicine purchase intention. Practically managers of firms will likely be able to engage more customers in online platforms advancing such factors. The study of online medicine purchase intention is novel during the COVID-19 pandemic in a specific country context.
- ItemOpen AccessEffect of Human Resource Investment on the Financial Performance of Publicly Listed Banks in Bangladesh -(North South University, 2020-06) Rubaiya Nadia Huda; Rifat Iqbal; Quazi Tafsirul Islam; Jashim Uddin AhmedHuman Resource (HR) Accounting is a well-known concept, as indicated in several past studies, which demonstrates the study of investments made on different HR components and attempts to make sense of those expenses in the age of evidence-based management. In this study, we have tried to identify and establish a relationship between Human Resource investment and the company’s financial performance. The study focuses on the impact of Human Resource investment on the financial performance of banks in Bangladesh. This research is carried out using secondary data from the financial statements of listed banks under the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). Financial information of all thirty publicly listed banks under the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) are collected for a period of five years from 2013 to 2017. For this study, we use HR expense as a measure of the human resource investment and analyze the relationship between HR expense and bank’s financial performance. It has been carried out by taking into account a variety of industry factors and bank-specific variables. Regression analysis is used to test the hypothesis developed for the study. Results indicate a positive relationship between Human resource investment and the bank’s financial performance.

Khaled Amin; Mahmud Habib Zaman; Afrina Amin; Mohammad Mahboob RahmanThe study aims to apply the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUD model to understand both adoption and usage behavior of various Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) enabled products and services among the students of Higher Education Institutions (HEls) in Bangladesh. The study was carried out at the tertiary level education institute, consisting of 210 respondents drawn from three departments (Le., science, business and engineering) of a leading private university in Bangladesh. The model confirmed a good fit with the data, and explained 47% of the variance for Behavioral Intention (BI) and 35% for Usage Behavior (UB). Results of the study confirmed the significant direct effect of the variables, i.e., Performance Expectancy (PE), Effort Expectancy (EE) and Social Influence (SI) on Behavioral Intention (BI) to use ICTs at the tertiary level education. The study's findings may contribute to both academia and policy makers to devise program to understand and enhance various Information and Communication Technologies (IC7k) based platforms in higher educational institutions (HEIs) of Bangladesh.
- ItemOpen AccessExploring the Level of Acceptance of e-Newspapers over Print Newspapers(North South University, 2022-06) Farzana Nahid; Helal AhammadNewspapers have been a dominant medium of communication and knowledge transfer around the world for over four centuries. Recently, due to the exponential rise of the Internet and online platforms to satisfy the knowledge demands of consumers, news consumers are slowly shifting to digital platforms to consume news. In fact, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption process of digital channels and e-newspapers, and potentially questions the relevance of printed newspapers. The objective of this study is to understand the behavioral change or acceptance of Bangladeshi newspaper readers in light of the rising demand for e-newspapers. This study applies a qualitative approach where in-depth interviews of 60 people from diverse demographic backgrounds and geographical locations were conducted for data collection. According to the findings, e-newspapers are considered to be faster, accessible, and convenient especially to young generation. However, quality of connection, news trustworthiness, digital literacy and cost related to e-newspaper reading are some of the factors that are still considered as not that improved or developed. On the other hand, printed newspapers still count as an icon of the habit, cultural heritage, convenience of reading and storing, and affordability to middle aged and elderly generation. Therefore, the finding of this research suggests the coexistence of both print newspapers and e-newspapers as both versions have demand. While the younger generation may be comfortable with the transition to e- newspapers, the general newspaper readers especially professionals from sub-urban areas along with older generation both in metropolitan cities and sub-urban areas still prefer print newspapers.

The present research study has a certain aim to identify whether factors of expectancy theory do motivate employee for delivering high involvement at workplace. This study is a casual research in nature. Using nine components, the present study extracted three fundamental factors by using factor analysis method. This report found that are most important factors to be considered valance, instrumentality and expectancy in this order .For data collection, a questionnaire survey of 100 executives of private bank of Dhaka district was carried out. This research could help researchers and practitioners in terms of framing the concept of job involvement not only for banking industry as well as for other industries in Bangladesh.
- ItemOpen AccessFactors influencing positive work environment: a study on female workers of rmg sector in bangladesh(North South University, 2016-06) Kazi Nazmul Huda; Mohammad Mahboob RahmanPositive Work Environment (PWE) is a momentous issue for all kinds of organizations to ensure a quality workplace that adds essential value to the manufacturing organizations such as Ready Made Garments (RMG). The primary purpose of this study is to explore the determining factors of PWE and their role in ensuring a supportive workplace for the female workers in RMG factories. The current study is based on primary data collected through structured questionnaire from 100 female workers working in RMG factories outside Chittagong Export Processing Zone, Bangladesh. Results found five significant factors namely Effective Work System Factor, Job Security Factor, Emotional Support factor, Workplace learning factor, and Work life balance factor that are able to explain 80.81% of variation to understand the concepts of positive work environment. The study also identified two variables namely Counseling and Grievance Management, which are the most influencing variables in ensuring PWE. The study also offered few managerial implications of applying and ensuring PWE in RMG sector to contribute more to national income

Fahami Ahsan Mazmum; Mohammad Mahboob RahmanThe purpose of this research is to explain the critical factors that are influencing the usage of 3G mobile services among the young citizens of Bangladesh. This study applied cross-sectional research design where the researchers used survey questionnaires for data collection. A total of 200 responses were collected from students of Bangladesh higher learning institutions. The data was analyzed through exploratory factor analysis (EM) and regression. The results indicated two constructs (perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use) of technology acceptance model (TAM) along with personal innovativeness have positive and significant effect whereas perceived price has a negative impact and image factors failed to prove any significance on 3G mobile service usage intentions of young citizens. The repercussion originated from this study will help the policymakers of the mobile service operators to provide better service and to make this young consumer group more satisfied.
